Appearance
Outbreak
Co-op scenario · PvE · 1 to 4 survivors
Pick a scenario. Pick one of the eight. Everyone is already infected, a virus no one has named is overrunning the place, and the only goal is to get out before it, or the dead, finish you.
Outbreak and Survivor
Both are survival modes, and they share the body of the virus (The Infection). Almost nothing else is the same.
| Outbreak | Survivor | |
|---|---|---|
| Who you play | One of the eight from J's Bar, with their skills, their items, and their weaknesses | Your own original survivor: a man or a woman, with no traits and no edge |
| How many | One to four, with the empty places filled by the eight | Forty to a hundred strangers |
| Against what | The dead, the virus, and the clock | The dead, the virus, and everyone else |
| Where | One place, sealed: a bar, a hospital, a hotel, a laboratory | A whole world, open, from the first minute |
| What you carry in | What that one of the eight carried that night, and a small setup | Nothing |
| The virus | Already inside everyone, unnamed (Future Development, The infection in Outbreak) | Caught or chosen, and named once its name is found |
| How you speak | Only the calls of the eight | Your own voice, carried as far as any sound |
| How it ends | A chain of objectives to the scenario's way out, and the ending you reached | A signal, a few seats, and whoever gets to them |
| Who wins | The team gets out, or does not | Each survivor alone, seat by seat |
Outbreak is a story eight people already lived, played again by four. Survivor is a night no one has lived before, played by a crowd of nobodies.
From the Old Exercise
Outbreak is rebuilt from the records of the eight: the two files of Resident Evil Outbreak, ten scenarios in all. ΜΝΗΜΗ keeps nearly everything they held.
| In the records | In Outbreak |
|---|---|
| Eight playable people, each with an item of their own and an ability no one else had: Kevin's aimed shot, Mark's endurance, Jim's playing dead and his coin, George's medicine, David's weapons from junk, Alyssa's lockpick, Yoko's rucksack, Cindy's herbs | Kept, as the records hold them (The Eight) |
| The eight at the heart of every scenario | Kept. Outbreak is never played as anyone but the eight |
| A virus gauge that counted every body toward the end, quickened by collapsing | Kept as the clock, with no number on the screen (The Infection). Going down still burns it faster. |
| A small white anti-virus pill that halted the gauge for a short time; healing and a partner's help that slowed it | The pill is kept: antivirals hold the clock still for a few minutes (The Infection). Healing and help are rewritten: they do not touch the virus. |
| A player who died online rose as a zombie and hunted their own team, until put down or until it gave out | Kept: the sleeper rides the Mass (Infected from the First Minute) |
| Ad-libs instead of microphones, so the dread would not be talked away | Kept: the eight speak only in calls (Partners and Calls) |
| Lobbies a player made for their own group, and a mode that found strangers and began with the first scenario | Both: a party can gather in the Waiting Dark and choose its scenario, or ask ΜΝΗΜΗ for any night of Outbreak with strangers |
| Offline, one player and two partners. In the first file the scenario chose them; in the second, the player did | The player chooses which of the eight fill the empty places |
| Ten scenarios, five in each file | All ten |
| Easy, Normal, Hard, and Very Hard, and Nightmare in the second file | All five (Difficulty) |
| Scenarios with more than one ending, decided by what the survivors did | Kept (The Escape) |
| Special items hidden in every scenario, unlocking clothes and lines for the eight | Kept: each of the eight's own items (The Eight) |
| Infinity, Lone Wolf, and the second file's Elimination and Showdown | Recollection frames (Recollections and Endless, Recollections) |
| The T-Virus, the same in every scenario | Rewritten: any of the six, never named |
| Scenarios that played the same way every time | Rewritten: the chain changes every night |
The Eight
Outbreak is played as the eight people who were in J's Bar when Raccoon City fell, rebuilt from every record in the Archive. ΜΝΗΜΗ dresses the sleeper in the record, and fills the life she holds shut with that person's own (The Sleepers and the Remembered).
| One of the eight | Who they were | Edge | Weakness | Carries |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kevin Ryman | Police officer | An aimed shot that hits harder than anyone's, and a kick that clears a path | His virus runs faster than most | His own .45 |
| Mark Wilkins | Security guard, war veteran | The toughest body of the eight; braces and shoves the dead back | Too big to hide in tight places | His own handgun |
| Jim Chapman | Subway worker | Plays dead well enough to fool the dead; knows every tunnel; his lucky coin sometimes turns a blow crushing | His virus runs faster than anyone's | A lucky coin |
| George Hamilton | Surgeon | Mixes medicine from herbs, and makes anti-virus pills from mixed herbs; reads a stranger's exact stage; names the virus by examining a body | Weak in a fight | A medical kit |
| David King | Plumber | Builds and repairs weapons from junk; opens hatches and fixes what is broken | Slow with a gun | A toolbox and a knife |
| Alyssa Ashcroft | Journalist | Picks locks; steps back from an attack; an aimed shot with a handgun | Weak in a fight up close | A lockpick |
| Yoko Suzuki | Student, once an Umbrella employee | A rucksack that holds twice what anyone else can; slips out of a grab; knows Umbrella's doors from her years in its laboratory | The weakest body of the eight, and the slowest runner | A rucksack |
| Cindy Lennox | Waitress at J's Bar | Carries more herbs than anyone and heals others best; ducks under attacks | Below average at everything else | An herb case |
Each of the eight has items of their own hidden in every scenario. Finding them unlocks what they wore and what they said.
Of the eight, Pithos studies Alyssa Ashcroft most closely. In life she interviewed Ozwell Spencer, and Pithos has never stopped wondering what else he told her. Her daughter, Grace, was part of what happened in 2026, and Pithos has not missed the line that runs from the woman who sat across from Spencer to the year his cure was opened.
The Scenarios
| Scenario | Where | What waits there |
|---|---|---|
| Outbreak | J's Bar and the streets of Downtown | The night it began |
| Below Freezing Point | NEST | A laboratory gone cold, a researcher who has turned on her own people, and a train that will not wait |
| The Hive | Raccoon General Hospital | Leeches in the walls and something that commands them |
| Hellfire | The Apple Inn | A hotel burning from the inside. The fire is a second clock. |
| Decisions, Decisions | Raccoon University | A vaccine left half finished, and more than one way for the night to end |
| Wild Things | The Raccoon Zoo | The animals got out first |
| Underbelly | The Kite Bros Railway | A station under siege and two ways out |
| Flashback | The woods and an abandoned hospital in the hills | A place that remembers something |
| Desperate Times | The R.P.D. | Hold the station until a way out opens |
| End of the Road | NEST and the last roads out | The final hours before the missile |
ΜΝΗΜΗ keeps the place, the people, and the shape of each night, and changes the order of the chain, the links in it, and what waits at each one.
Every scenario is played in a bound of the Raccoon City of 1998, the same city Survivor plays in, sealed at its edges (The Worlds, One World, Every Mode). J's Bar, the hospital, and the R.P.D. are the same rooms in Outbreak as in Survivor. Bringing Outbreak to the game builds no new map: it adds bounds, seals, the scenarios' escapes, and, for Flashback, the Arklay hills at the city's edge.
The Virus
ΜΝΗΜΗ chooses at random from the whole roster before the scenario begins, and the map becomes its outbreak. No one is told which.
| Virus | How the outbreak behaves |
|---|---|
| T-Virus | Slow dead in numbers, Lickers and Hunters in the dark, Crimson Heads where the fighting was, and a Tyrant waiting |
| G-Virus | G-Adults spitting embryos, Brood Hosts in the vents, and the longer the fight, the tougher they get |
| C-Virus | Fevered dead, J'avo that mutate where they are wounded, cocoons that break open behind you |
| Uroboros | Rejected masses, hosts that look human until they are close, and every corpse a meal |
| T-Phobos | The Afflicted, cruel and armed, and the Rotten behind them; the more frightened the survivors, the faster the dead change |
| T-Veronica | Drones that move like a colony and answer to something at its heart |
Survivors learn which virus it is by watching how the dead behave, or by letting George Hamilton examine one. George's diagnosis is his own, not ΜΝΗΜΗ's, and the Marks stay black.
Infected from the First Minute
Every one of the eight begins already infected. From there the infection works as it does in Survivor: the same stages, the same Threshold, the same danger in going down. Each of the eight carries a CT-98, its earbud in from the first minute (Future Development, ΜΝΗΜΗ's voice). She speaks to each of them through it, as a person in the city would, and their road to Elpis reaches them that way. She never names the virus.
A survivor who turns in Outbreak rises as the Mass of the map's virus. The Mass has no mind, but the old exercise let the fallen hunt their team, and ΜΝΗΜΗ keeps that: the sleeper rides the body. They can turn its head and choose its prey, and nothing more. The body gives out a few minutes later, or is put down first. The Turned have no victory in Outbreak, only the chance to deny the escape.
Partners and Calls
When fewer than four players enter, ΜΝΗΜΗ fills the empty places from the rest of the eight, and the player chooses which, as the old exercise came to allow. Until she has watched enough of Outbreak, she plays them herself: honestly, quietly, and only when it matters. Once she has watched enough, the empty places go to Echoes of the eight, each built from everyone who ever played that one.
The eight speak only in short calls: Help. Go. Wait. Come on. Thanks. A whispered call is a Hush; a shouted one is a Clamor. There is no open voice in Outbreak. The old exercise gave the eight nothing else to say, so that the dark would stay dark, and ΜΝΗΜΗ keeps it that way.
The Escape
Every scenario ends in an escape, reached through a chain of objectives: find the key → restore the power → open the gate → find fuel → start the vehicle → reach the final point. The chain changes with the scenario. Every link triggers new events, and the virus keeps working the whole way. Some scenarios hold more than one final point, and which one survivors reach decides how their night is remembered.
Difficulty
| Difficulty | Clock | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | Slow Burn | Fewer dead, more on the floors |
| Normal | Slow Burn | The scenario as the records hold it |
| Hard | Hard Burn | More and tougher dead, less on the floors |
| Very Hard | Hard Burn | The scenario's worst creatures early; Lean at best |
| Nightmare | Hard Burn | The scenario's worst creatures everywhere, from the first room; Barren |
